Japanese Mini Uchiwa Fan (Red Diamond)

Japanese Mini Uchiwa Fan (Red Diamond)

Sale Price:£20.00 Original Price:£28.00

This Japanese Mini Uchiwa Fan (Red Diamond) is made in Kumamoto, one of the three major producers of Uchiwa Fans due to the city's abundance of bamboo and washi paper required to make the fans. Unique to Uchiwa fans, a coating of insect repelling persimmon tannin is applied to strengthen the fibres in the washi paper used to make the fans for lifelong use.

The word Uchiwa refers to a non-folding type fan that has a fixed shape. It is believed that Uchiwa fans originated in the 1600’s when a travelling monk exchanged their knowledge of Uchiwa fan making with lodging in Marugame, Shikoku. Shikoku is the smallest of four islands, home to 88 sacred temples and Japan’s most famous pilgrimage. Shikoku is also more commonly known by locals as a region so as not to be confused with the island also called ‘Shikoku’.

In Japan, Uchiwa Fans are often given to friends, family and colleagues as it is believed that Uchiwa fans bring in luck and prosperity. The Japanese Mini Uchiwa Fans are suitable for children and adults in our selection of Blue Wave, Red Diamond and Green Mokko. And for those who enjoy a simple and natural colour palette, we suggest our Japanese Uchiwa Fans in Black, Brown and Stripe. Bring out your fans during the hot summer days and in the cooler months put them on display in your home as a decoration.
