Shinto Towels | Tradition Meets Sustainability

A sustainable approach to making high quality towels that protect your skin and the local landscape

The Atozarashi process

Shinto Towel uses the atozarashi process which is a post-weaving refining process. This process involves washing and bleaching the cotton after weaving. This ensures that the natural starches, oils and other impurities found in organic cotton can be removed. As a result, an airy and fluffy textured towel is achieved with a higher absorbency level than traditionally made towels.

Sustainable Change Since 2021

Shinto Towel manufacturers produce their towels using sustainably sourced materials. Since 2021, Shinto Towels had decided to switch from cotton to organic cotton. Acknowledging the importance and volume of water needed to make the towels, Shinto Towel took a step forward to a more sustainable approach by partnering with the Atozarashi plant. The Atozarashi plant is where the residual wastewater from the making of the towels are collected. The stored wastewater is then circulated in their purifying facility before being released back into the nearby river. This change was brought in after searching for manufacturing options that would have less harmful impact on the environment and would protect the local landscape and ecosystem.
