@aroma | Capturing Atmosphere in a Scent
Shaping Spaces with Scent
The Tokyo-based scent design studio @aroma specialises in designing aromatic spaces inspired by the mystical power of ancient Japanese landscapes. Working at the intersection of aromatherapy and interior design, @aroma’s in-house aroma space designers expertly blend together naturally sourced materials to connect past and present for a rich sensory experience.
Japanese Nature as a Source of Inspiration
Traditional scents sourced from native Japanese plants and trees form the base notes for @aroma’s collection of original aroma oils and scents. Each scent is crafted from a unique blend of essential oils sourced from various botanicals, roots, herbs, and citrus, which reflect the local climate and culture of Japan.
@aroma’s 100% natural essential oil blends can be combined with their design-conscious aroma diffusers to ensure gentle distillation for the modern home or workspace. Amidst our increasing disconnect with natural landscapes, personalising spaces with natural aromas offer a balancing path toward “connecting the body, mind and the environment.”
About the Japanese Botanical Air Collection
The Japanese Botanical Air collection brings together a selection of unique blends using essential oils of native Japanese plants. The Hokkaido Hakka, for example, is a Japanese peppermint grown in Northern Japan which has been used for healing purposes since ancient times. The leaves are dried naturally before being placed inside a distillation kiln to carefully extract the essential oil. The precious oil imparts a pleasant aroma of soft sweetness and a refreshing breeze as a light wind travels through the green fields of northern Hokkaido. Other green fragrances such as Koyamaki (umbrella pine) evokes the sacred air in the pilgrimage journey to Mount Koya, home to the holy Buddhist site.
About the Japanese Design Air Collection
The Japanese Design Air Collection brings together a selection of blended scents featuring the ancient Hinoki cypress as a base note. Yoshino Hinoki is a type of native Japanese cypress wood grown in central Japan. For centuries, hinoki has been used for in the building of Buddhist temples and the essential oil of hinoki wood is extracted through steam distillation.
Each scent in the collection features a Japanese symbol, which conveys a mood expressed by Japanese aesthetic concepts. Heian-based aesthetic ideals such Miyabi “雅” (meaning “elegance” or “grace”) express refinement through deep, fragrant notes of cedarwood and frankincense, while the Edo-based Iki “粋” (meaning “originality”) which expresses simplicity or sophistication is comprised of earthly tones including as hinoki cypress, juniper and spike lavender.
